A number of repair works need to be carried out at Sandy Sensation, Carnoustie, after some of the play park equipment was damaged by vandals.

It is understood damage has been caused to the paddling pool, a seating area around the play area and a newly-painted beach pavilion adjacent to the park. The cost of repairs is said to be more than £3,000.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul, Angus Council's Vice Convener of Communities, said: "There have been several incidents of serious vandalism in recent weeks at the seafront in Carnoustie. Not only have the vandals caused over £3,000 worth of damage, it means that the seats will now be out of action while we obtain and fit replacement parts and the paddling pool will be closed when we make repairs.

"It is disappointing that this has happened during the school summer holiday period when the play area is well used by local people and visitors alike, and also just as we had finished painting the beach pavilion. It is particularly disheartening to see this destruction at times of severe budget cuts. Funds will have to be diverted to pay for these repairs which could have been put towards other services."
