Aberdeen Council has announced that tender submissions for the Third Don Crossing works have opened.

The local authority is now inviting offers for the ambitious £15.5m project, which will see the creation of a new bridge located over the River Don, as well as a new stretch of road linking it to the road network north of the Don. In addition, there will also be realigning and upgrading of roads to the south of the river.

Council Leader Jenny Laing said: "The Third Don Crossing is one of the priorities identified in our Strategic Infrastructure Plan as a key strategic infrastructure project which is necessary to underpin the city's continuing growth.

"The opening of the bids marks a clear milestone in this important roads project. The Third Don Crossing is a significant piece of infrastructure for Aberdeen, which will relieve pressure on the extremely busy roads network in the north of the city and help to reduce journey times and congestion.

"The next stage is to formally appoint a contractor, which we will do in the next few weeks to ensure construction can begin as soon as possible."

It is understood officers will consider the four bids and will recommend a preferred bidder to the Council's Finance, Policy and Resources Committee later this month.

Construction on the Third Don project is expected to start later this year, with the new bridge due to be substantially completed and open to the public by late 2015.
