A project to help protect the natural environment in the Cumnock area has been completed.
The investment, valued at £4.9m, included a significant upgrade to the Underwood Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW), which serves around 18,000 in the area.
The project commenced in March 2011 and was carried out by contractors Expanded and JLES. It involved upgrading plant and equipment at the WWTW, as well as the installation of an additional process stage to ensure compliance with new consent conditions. This work included replacing fine screens, installing a new aeration system and control system, plus other modifications.
Gary Caig, Scottish Water's Waste Water Assets Manager, said: "Scottish Water is very pleased to have completed this major investment in the Underwood WWTW, which is a key facility in our waste water infrastructure in Ayrshire.
"It plays a very important role in providing waste water services to customers across a wide area and this investment will ensure that it continues to provide a first-class service for many years to come."
