Over £29m Paid Out In DHP Scheme

More than £29m has been paid out by local authorities in 2013/14 under the Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP) scheme, new figures have revealed.

The statistics, which have been released by Scotland's Chief Statistician, found that just over 87,000 awards were made under the scheme in the 12 months from April 2013 to March 2014, with local councils receiving almost 111,000 applications.

The project provides financial assistance towards housing costs for those claiming housing benefit.

Elsewhere, the publication revealed that by the end of March 2014, around 107,000 claims had been processed, with just over 87,000 awards granted. The average payment was around £335.
