RIAS 2014 Shortlist Announced

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced a shortlist of 27 projects for its 2014 Awards.

The SAS International Group congratulated those who made the shortlist, with special mention for Scottish Water - The Bridge, Stepps by Reiach & Hall Architects and The SSE Hydro, Glasgow by Foster + Partners.

As a leading manufacturer of interior fit-out solutions, SAS International supplied metal fit-out solutions for both of the above projects. For Scottish Water's – The Bridge project, SAS International's System 600 (lighting rafts) and suspended ceiling System 150 were supplied; while SAS International's SAS System 330, Tubeline and Baffles were supplied for The SSE Hydro development.

Andrew Jackson, Director at SAS International, said: "SAS International is significant employer in Scotland, with our long-established manufacturing facility based in Maybole where we produce a range of solutions for building fit-outs and recently invested in expanding our operations there.

"We are of course delighted when our solutions are used in Scottish projects. The RIAS Awards are a great event in the calendar and representative of how exciting and innovative architectural projects are being realised."

The judging panel for this year include Douglas Read PPRIAS, Marjorie Appleton FRIAS, Liz Davidson Hon FRIAS, Craig White RIBA and George Oldham RIBA RIAS, representing the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Commenting on each project, the judges said:

• The Bridge, Stepps by Reiach & Hall Architects for Scottish Water – A new Scottish classicism delineates this elegant office development at the edge of a business park. The restraint of the external forms and materials is continued within the dramatic central atrium.

• The SSE Hydro building in Glasgow by Foster + Partners – By raising the circular auditorium at an angle, a simple servicing and access diagram is created below the 'flying saucer' form of this new landmark. Superbly lit it becomes a night-time beacon.

The final decisions will be announced at the RIAS Awards Dinner on 18 June 2014.
