Transformation Of Barrhead Main Street Continues

Plans to transform Barrhead Main Street are continuing with two new multi-million pound developments.

East Renfrewshire Council has said it is preparing to start construction work on a major extension at Barrhead Sports Centre as part of a £3.8m project.

The local authority is transforming Barrhead Sports Centre into the Barrhead Foundry, a state-of-the-art community hub with improved sports facilities, fantastic new library, business and back-to-work support, cafe and flexible community and learning spaces. There will also be major refurbishment works on the existing building, with a two-storey extension built to the front.

Elsewhere, supermarket chain ASDA, which is building a £20m supermarket next to the centre, has started demolition work of the former health centre in order to prepare the site for construction next year. The supermarket is being built on a redundant site to the rear of the former health centre and will incorporate a car park for up to 250 vehicles as well as a petrol station. It will also include a range of greenspace and street furniture improvements to the front and rear of the store and also represents a significant investment for the town.

Convener for Infrastructure and Sustainable Growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: "The major investment being made by the council in the new Barrhead Foundry and the construction of the new Asda store are very exciting developments for the town.

"It was terrific to see such swift progress being made in such a short space of time, and people will really begin to see a difference once the next phase of work starts in the coming weeks.

"This really will transform the face of Barrhead Main Street - I can't wait to see it come to fruition."
