School In East Renfrewshire Scoops Award

East Renfrewshire's newest school has won a major honour.

The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) has named Eastwood High as a winner in its Design Awards 2013.

The award goes to the school's designers, BDP.

Judges said the school had a 'warm and welcoming environment' and was built as part of a 'unique project.

Eastwood High is one of two winners in the education category of the awards. The exciting announcement comes just weeks after the official opening ceremony for the school.

Eastwood High in Newton Mearns opened its doors to pupils for the first time in August.

It was the first in Scotland to be built under the groundbreaking 'schools for the future' programme run by the Scottish Futures Trust.

This saw East Renfrewshire Council join forces with Midlothian Council to work together with the same design and construction companies.

Convener for education and equalities, Councillor Elaine Green, said: "I have visited Eastwood High School many times since it opened and I am always astonished at what a fantastic place it is.

"It's great news, especially coming so soon after the wonderful official opening of the school, which was another cause for celebration.

"Everyone at Eastwood is thrilled with their new school and they will be as delighted as I am that it has won this major award."
