SSE has said it will adjust its prices if the government cuts green levies.

It is the latest of the large energy companies to make the pledge, following EDF and Npower earlier this week.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5, Alan Young from SSE said if the levies were to be cut, "we will adjust our bills accordingly – no ifs, no buts."

From Friday, the firm is to increase its average energy tariffs by 8.2%.

Mr Young's comments come after SSE published its half-year financial results. For the six months to 30 September 2013, the company record a pre-tax profit of £336.4m. Taking out one-off items, the underlying profits fell to £354m, from £400.8m in the same period a year previously.

Elsewhere, SSE's retail business recorded an operating loss of £89.4m, while its energy supply division made a loss of £115.4m, compared to a profit of £48.3m a year previously.

The energy firm said this reflected the "impact of higher wholesale gas, distribution, environmental and social costs".
