Calls To Protect Green Belt Sites

Construction News Image
East Dunbartonshire Council has requested its neighbouring authority – Glasgow City Council – to reconsider proposals to expand greenbelt areas for development along their shared border.

Last year, Glasgow City Council sought views regarding two development sites at Summerston and Robroyston.

The site at Summerston, is east of Killermont Golf Club, while the site at Robroyston is south of Auchinairn Road.

Both locations are in greenbelt areas and there had been proposals made to have them released to build housing. At the time, East Dunbartonshire opposed the plans, arguing that there should be no further encroachment into the greenbelt.

Since then however, situations have changed and Glasgow City Council is now consulting to build on additional greenbelt.

It is understood the Council's continued opposition is focused around the need to "maintain a sustainable compact city-region" as is expressed within the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Strategic Development Plan.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council's Development & Regeneration Committee, said: "Protecting the greenbelt in and around East Dunbartonshire has always been a priority for this Council and we promote strongly the use of brownfield sites first and foremost for development.

"We believe that the supply of brownfield sites in Glasgow has not been exhausted and therefore the release of greenbelt instead cannot be justified."
