Major resurfacing works are to begin today (Monday 22 July) along the A749, just outside East Kilbride.

South Lanarkshire Council has said the works between Cairnmuir Road and Cathkin Roundabout will run until Friday 2 August.

Throughout the works, a contraflow system will be in place, allowing the road to remain open. However, there will be restrictions on speed while traffic will be reduced to one lane each way.

The northbound (Glasgow bound) carriageway will be closed from 7am on Monday 22 July until 7am on Sunday 28 July with the contraflow in operation on the southbound carriageway.

Following this, the southbound (East Kilbride bound) carriageway will then be closed from 7am on Sunday 28 July until 7pm on Friday 2 August with the contraflow in operation on the northbound carriageway.

Councillor Chris Thompson, Chair of the Council's Enterprise Resources Committee, said: "The contraflow system means we will be able to keep traffic moving along the A749 during these vital resurfacing works.

"However, journeys may take a little longer so I would ask that people ensure they leave more time if they are travelling on the A749 during the works. We apologise for any inconvenience."
