Two More Dundee Tower Blocks Demolished

Two more of Dundee's tower blocks have been demolished.

On Sunday, an exclusion zone was set up in the area, with up to 20 roads closed as preparations got underway. Around 60 commercial properties and 600 homes nearby were also evacuated, while St Martin's Episcopal Church, located in between the two towers, had to close its doors.

The demolition contract, worth £2.4m, was carried out by Dundee company Safedem Ltd, and the destruction and direction of collapse of the 24-storey Butterburn Court and Bucklemaker Court, Hilltown, was controlled by more than 10,000 detonators and delays.

It is understood the church only suffered minor damage in the demolition.

Speaking after the demolition process, City Council Housing convener Councillor John Alexander said: "The blowdown was a great success and I'd like to thank and congratulate all those involved in the process, from start to finish. Today marks another day in the continued regeneration of the Hilltown area and I look forward to seeing the area transformed in future years.

"The removal of these two colossal multi storey blocks inevitably has a dramatic effect on the city's landscape and along with other key developments such as the V&A at Dundee shows the city's continued growth and regeneration.

"It's great to see this area of the Hilltown come out from the shade and we are focused on working with the community to deliver the Hilltown Regeneration Framework to create a prosperous and vibrant community."

In 2011, four other tower blocks were demolished in the Hilltown area as part of regeneration projects.
