Donald Trump is understood to be visiting Scotland this week to press ahead with plans for a new golf course in Aberdeenshire.

According to the Scotsman, the business main hopes to construct a second championship course which he hopes to name after his Scottish mother.

It is understood the new course would be located at Mr Trump's £750m Aberdeenshire golf resort.

In February, the Trump Organisation submitted a planning application for the project at the Menie Estate after it was initially granted outline planning permission in December 2008. The course, which would be named the Mary MacLeod course, has been designed by golf architect Dr Martin Hawtree. Mr Hawtree also designed the main championship course at Menie.

During his visit, Trump is thought to want to fine-tune the plans for the second course before submitting a more detailed plan to Aberdeenshire Council.

Speaking about the proposed course earlier this year, the American business tycoon said: "Once again, Martin Hawtree’s design is genius - we have the greatest piece of links land in the world and the unprecedented demand to play our championship course has accelerated our plans to build the second course."

Hawtree added that the design would see a par-72 course constructed, ranging between 7,500 and 5,500 yards and would be "situated on land with an extraordinary richness of landscape and topography; but every inch a seaside links course."
