Angus Council is to demolish empty blocks of flats in Marywell Gardens, Kirriemuir and build five new affordable homes on the site.

The £800,000 project costs and the procurement process were approved by the Neighbourhood Services committee on Thursday, 16 August. The council agreed in February to demolish the hard-to-let flats and build houses on the cleared site.

The council is submitting a bid for support funding to the Scottish Government for more affordable housing in Angus. The Marywell Gardens project is part of that bid, which if successful would free up council cash for further housing schemes.

Welcoming the committee's decision, vice-convener of Neighbourhood Services councillor Jeanette Gaul said: "This is good news for people on our housing waiting list as it adds five urgently needed homes to our housing stock, as well as removing the empty blocks of flats. We plan to begin building the Kirriemuir homes in March, with completion next August, and the houses will benefit from high levels of insulation and reduced energy costs."

Councillor Gaul added: "The Kirriemuir development follows on from our completed new housing projects in Carnoustie and Arbroath and those underway in Montrose and Forfar. They have all been constructed to high standard, using sustainable materials and techniques, and provide excellent accommodation for our tenants."
