Part of Dundee Railway Station is to be demolished ahead of redevelopment plans.

Sir Robert McAlpine of Hertfordshire has been awarded the £3m contract for taking down station buildings and weight-restricted bridges.

This will make way for the construction of a new five-storey concourse building, shaped like a crescent and including a hotel.

A full planning application will be submitted later this year for the new development, which has been designed by local architects Nicoll Russell Studios in conjunction with Jacobs Engineering.

It is part of the Central Waterfront project to create a new public square and attractive arrival space outside the station next to the V&A@Dundee.

Plans are going out for consultation and the key feature is the use of natural light and the double height ground floor.

The 12 week consultation programme will include community councils, Dundee Civic Trust, local businesses and the Dundee public.

Commuters, station users and local people will get a chance to view and have their say on the plans at a public meeting to be arranged at a local venue in early August.

A council report in April noted that the majority of funding for the development had been secured or identified.
