New rules have been introduced this week that aim to reduce the number of planning applications and help householders to make changes to their home.

The Scottish government has introduced legislation that will allow individuals to tackle the majority of extensions, sheds and garages without planning permission being required from Falkirk Council.

The new rules also apply to decking, porches and access ramps.

However restrictions will still apply in conservation areas and with listed buildings.

The Council's convener of economic strategy and development, Cllr Adrian Mahoney, said: "These new rules should make it easier for people to carry out small improvements to their properties and get involved with less red tape.

"However, I'd urge people to continue to check with our planning team if they have any doubts about whether they will need planning permission or not. Advice and guidance is free of charge."
