At their Association of Public Service Excellence's Performance Networks awards evening, Dumfries and Galloway was named most improved council for Street Lighting.

The event was heldrecently at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool and was hosted by Samia Smith, best known for her role in Coronation Street as Maria Connor.

Stuart Hamilton, Street Lighting Supervisor in our Council's DGFirst, received the award from Samia.

Chair of DGFirst Management Committee, Councillor Graham Nicol, said: "These awards are all about striving to improve performance. Our street lighting team in DGFirst and their colleagues in DG Design and Planning and Environment are always looking for ways to give a better service and be more efficient.

"Unlike a number of councils, we have not yet had to turn lights off. Instead our teams have been doing trials including different methods of street lighting. In September we started a trial of LED lights in Glentrool. If the feedback and results are good, we could expand the use of LED lighting to other villages around the region, saving hundreds and possibly even thousands of pounds a year on each installation.
