Pupils at Lornshill Academy are celebrating after being awarded their first Green Flag.

The school's 1000+ pupils, led by an eco-committee and geography teacher Georgina Lawrence, have been working on a range of environmental schemes and improvements.

Councillor George Matchett, Inclusion Portfolio Holder, said: "My congratulations go to everyone at Lornshill Academy on this achievement. The eco school programme makes an important contribution to achieving environmental awareness by encouraging young people to learn about and improve their environment and to live in a more environmentally sustainable way. The eco school programme also links well with Curriculum for Excellence, encouraging cross curricular, rich learning experiences."

Initiatives have included: tackling litter; taking measures to reduce the school's gas and electricity bills and reducing the amount of waste produced.

Pupils have made short films to promote the eco school programme, held a 'week of action', a trash fashion show and an 'energy saving period' where as many objects as possible were switched off.
