A major upgrade of Tarvit Bridge over the River Eden at Pitscottie Road in Cupar has been completed by Transportation Services.
The project was part of Fife Council's programme of Bridge Replacement & Strengthening, approved by the Environment, Enterprise & Transportation committee in May 2009.
The Grade B listed bridge previously had an 18 tonne weight restriction due to the weakness of a modern extension on the east side. The weak extension has now been replaced with a reinforced concrete arch, which is faced in masonry to blend in with the historic part of the structure. The new arch is wider than the old extension, allowing the road alignment to be improved. In addition, extensive maintenance has been carried out on the historic part of the bridge and the parapets have been replaced to modern standards.
Although these works caused significant disruption to the local community, there are long-term benefits.
Removal of the weight restriction allows heavy vehicles to cease using less suitable roads and the changes to the road alignment and parapets improve safety. In addition, the maintenance work will ensure the historic structure will remain a feature in Cupar for many years to come.
Contractors RJ McLeod Ltd carried out work.
