A £1.65 million contract to resurface the M8 between Junctions II and III at Livingston was awarded this week.

Transport Scotland today announced that CEMEX UK Surfacing Ltd will be undertaking the work, which will deliver 2.5 miles of improved road surface, providing motorists with a safer, smoother journey.

The scheme, which forms part of a £25 million programme of ongoing investment in the M8, will see rebuilding of a section of this key arterial route and follows on from improvements implemented last year between Junctions 5 and 6.

Stephen Breslin, Project Manager at Transport Scotland said: “We are pleased to announce the contract award for these necessary resurfacing works on the M8. This scheme is part of a programme to maintain and improve this vital link through Scotland’s central belt.

"The M8 is one of Scotland's busiest route, with this section carrying over 64,000 vehicles daily.

"The project will benefit these motorists with smoother, safer journeys."

Once the resurfacing contract is completed, it is anticipated that around 12,000 tonnes of material from the M8 will be recycled - sufficient to fill two Olympic swimming pools.

Works are expected to begin late spring for a period of approximately one month, and will be managed by BEAR Scotland.
