The newly refurbished Portobello Library has been officially re-opened by Edinburgh Councillor Deidre Brock.
Since closing its doors in October 2009, the library has undergone a programme of upgrading works transforming it into a revitalised and modernised facility for the whole community.
The refurbishment plan for Portobello Library incorporated a wide range of suggestions made by members of staff and customers of all ages, during consultation exercises and from the Library's suggestion box. Every effort has been made to incorporate the history and the strong community spirit of the area in the new design and furnishings.
Following the revamp, Portobello is now the first city library to boast a 'Cuddle Book Corner' for babies to five-year-olds. This is a specialist designed area to attract our youngest customers and their parents and carers, providing an inspiring, bright space in which to learn more about books and reading.
There is also provision for teenagers through the Libraries for Youth (L4U) zone - a dedicated space for teens with selected books, games and a gaming area.
The new library houses a display area with comfortable seating, where the work of local artists and local information can be displayed. In addition, over 2000 new books have been acquired.
Finally, the library now boasts a brand new cafe with a relaxation and quiet reading area and an attractive outlook on to Portobello bowling green.
Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor, said: "Portobello Library is looking sensational following its recent refurbishment. I would like to congratulate the library team, who all worked very hard (often beyond the call of duty) to retain many services while the building was closed and for their valued help in making the refurbishment such a success.
"By ensuring that the revamp was informed by suggestions from library users and staff members alike, the Council has provided a relevant and progressive facility for the whole community to enjoy."
Jim Hunter, East Neighbourhood Manager, added: "The local community has been greatly involved in the refurbishment project for their library and I know there is a lot of excitement about the changes. The new facilities will be appreciated by residents of all ages and will help the library become a vital resource for the area."
The refurbishment of Portobello Library was funded by the capital investment programme allocated to Libraries within the Services for Communities department in 2008-2011.
