More than £1 million is to be spent improving central heating systems in council houses across Renfrewshire.

Over 400 Renfrewshire Council owned homes will get new gas central heating and hot water systems under the project.

These will replace existing electric heating and hot water systems and will help tackle the issue of fuel poverty affecting many people struggling with increasing fuel costs.

Councillor Brian Lawson, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Housing and Community Safety Policy Board, said: "This is very good news for our tenants. Fuel poverty is a serious issue affecting many people, particularly in the current economic climate.

"Renfrewshire Council is committed to supporting its tenants and this project is part of a £149million investment which will modernise and improve all council housing in Renfrewshire over the next six years, bringing us in line with the Scottish Housing Quality Standard."

The Council are finalising the details of that investment programme which it is anticipated will deliver up to 8,000 kitchens, replace 3,000 heating systems and rewire 8,000 houses by 2015.
