Found Nemo

Construction News Image
Scottish Water operator, Jake Huey rushed to the rescue, when Nemo was unusually found – at the Philipshill Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW).

It was nearly a sorry tail, with the little fish about to breathe its last gasp, inadvertently flushed down the toilet and about to meet its fin-ale.

Jake found the creature when routinely cleaning screens at the East Kilbride site. Quick thinking he grabbed the goldfish and sprinted for the treatment building, where he set up an emergency tank, saving the little creature, which has now been nicknamed ‘Pooh’.

WWTW operative Jake said: "It was just an immediate reaction. Obviously someone thought their pet was on its last legs and flushed it down the toilet, which obviously we wouldn’t advise. The fish has rallied as it made its way through the waste water network underneath the streets of East Kilbride and popped up in our screens totally revived."

Scottish Water regularly reminds customers what it is safe to flush down the toilet and what it is not. Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Items such as nappies, sanitary products, condoms, hygienic wipes and cotton buds should all be bagged and binned with household rubbish.

A recent study found items such as deckchairs, a mattress, false teeth, an outboard motor and even a parcel trolley had been found in the Scottish Water waste water network. We are encouraging customers to dispose of such rubbish responsibly, and play their part in protecting Scotland’s environment.

Jake added: "This is one lucky little fish. We just need to find a good home for him now."
