Engineers from Scotland Gas Networks have begun the task of removing hundreds of thousands of gallons of water that entered the gas network in the Dundas/Canonmills area of Edinburgh following a burst water main in Thistle Street.
Over 2,000 properties in the city's New Town have been without gas since the water leak at 1130 BST on Saturday.
SGN said it had to switch off the gas supply to every property before it could remove the water from the main.
Although SGN drafted in large numbers of staff in a bid to complete the remaining properties on Sunday, it could be well into the week before the problem is solved.
Specialist equipment is required to remove the water before the gas can be turned back on.
Anyone requiring assistance can contact SGN's 24-hour customer service centre on: 0845 070 1432.
