Aberdeen City Council's planning sub-committee has granted permission for the Archial Architect designed £40m expansion of the five-star Marcliffe Hotel and Spa at Pitfodels, on the outskirts of the city.

In addition to some 228 new bedrooms, Archial's extensive alterations and extension to the Marcliffe will create a reception, function area, lounge, leisure and spa accommodation, as well as a multi-level underground 291-space car park.


Charles Smith, director at Archial Architects, said: "There is currently a chronic shortage of five star quality accommodation available in Aberdeen. This substantial development will directly address that shortage by expanding significantly the number of rooms available at the Marcliffe, providing a welcome boost to the local economy.

"Our design solution for this exciting project will see the creation of a striking, contemporary building set within 11 acres of wooded grounds."

The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa is located in the western suburbs of Aberdeen just three miles from the city centre. Work is due to start on site later this year with completion scheduled for 2011.

The Archial Group Plc employs around 200 staff in Scotland, operating from offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness.
