Urgent Repairs Under Way To Reopen Kilcreggan Pier

Construction News Image

Work is being accelerated to reopen Kilcreggan Pier after it sustained damage during Storm Boelo over the weekend.

The response reflects the pier’s importance to the local community and the impact its closure has on ferry services between Kilcreggan and Gourock, which are currently suspended.

Approximately six tonnes of debris was driven onto the pier deck by heavy seas and is being cleared. Initial safety inspections have identified remedial tasks required before the pier can safely reopen, including:

- Reinstating the existing toe boards, which are expected to be reusable;

- Replacing and reinstating damaged decking boards along the berthing face;

- Lifting approximately 20 Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) deck panels to clear debris and inspect the underlying timber deck structure;

- Inspecting the structure from the water using a small boat to identify damage not visible from deck level;

- Investigating and repairing water supply issues; and

- Carrying out electrical safety inspections.

A contractor has been appointed to assist with inspections and repairs. The pier will remain closed until the inspections are complete and it has been confirmed safe for public use.
