Preparatory ground investigation work at Millport Pier is about to start, marking a key step in plans for new step-ashore marine facilities on Cumbrae, supported by Ayrshire Growth Deal funding.
Activity is due to commence on Monday, 26 October, with a specialist survey of the seabed next to the pier.
The survey, expected to last around three days, will inform the engineering design of proposed local marine upgrades, including new pontoons and piles, a quay extension, dredging and a revetment area.
During the operation, a 100-metre towing exclusion zone will be in place behind the survey vessel and mariners are asked to pass with caution. A formal Notice to Mariners has been issued.
Depending on the findings, borehole drilling and sediment sampling are anticipated towards the end of the year.
At that point, a fenced construction compound and welfare units will be set up on the pier, requiring a temporary closure. Unauthorised vehicle parking will also be restricted.
"We appreciate these types of marine works can be inconvenient, and we will do everything we can to reduce the impacts on local people, businesses, and visitors while we carry out these vital assessments for the future of the pier." — Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Islands
All works are subject to suitable weather and marine conditions.
