Steel Frames Go Up At New Hazlehead Academy Campus

Construction News Image

Erection of the steel frame has marked a key construction milestone at the new Hazlehead Academy Campus, one of Aberdeen City Council’s largest school estate projects.

Around 80 truckloads of steel are set to arrive on site as the £124 million development advances. Construction began in March 2026, with the new buildings rising on the existing school's playing fields so that Hazlehead Academy can operate as normal during the build.

The campus is due to open to pupils in August 2028. Demolition of the current school buildings and completion of the external sports facilities are scheduled to conclude by summer 2029.

Councillor Martin Greig, convener of the Education and Children's Services Committee, said: "Seeing the steel framework progressing is an exciting milestone and allows people to appreciate the scale of the new Hazlehead Academy Campus taking shape. This significant investment in our school estate will create a modern, high-quality learning environment where future generations of young people can thrive, supporting learning, achievement and wellbeing."

Ewen Fowlie, operations director for hub North Scotland, said: "The start of erecting steel work is a hugely significant milestone for this project as you can physically see the new campus building taking shape. This will be a transformational project for staff, pupils and the general public for generations to come."

Elliot Robertson, Chief Executive Officer, Robertson Group, said: "Projects like Hazlehead Academy Campus demonstrate the vital role that well-designed social infrastructure plays in shaping thriving communities. As the building takes shape, we can begin to see how this investment will support education, health, wellbeing and community life across Aberdeen for decades to come.

"Through our long-standing partnership with Aberdeen City Council and hub North Scotland, we are creating a future-ready campus that will provide outstanding opportunities for learning, sport and community use while delivering lasting social and economic value for the region."

Once complete, the campus will accommodate up to 1,600 pupils and include two full-size all-weather pitches alongside an athletics sprint track. It will serve an expanded catchment spanning the Hazlehead, Countesswells and Kingswells communities.

The scheme is being delivered by Aberdeen City Council's development partner, hub North Scotland, with construction carried out by Robertson Construction Group.
