Work Complete On Edinburgh's King's Theatre Redevelopment

Engineering consultancy Will Rudd has completed its work on the redevelopment of Edinburgh's historic King's Theatre, marking the end of several years of complex engineering on one of Scotland's best-known cultural venues.

The multi-award-winning civil, structural and conservation engineering consultancy worked as part of a wider project team alongside architect Bennetts Associates and contractor Robertson Construction.

Will Rudd provided civil and structural engineering services for the major refurbishment, which has modernised the Grade A listed theatre while retaining its historic character.

The redevelopment included raising the theatre's fly tower by five metres to accommodate a new flying system capable of supporting modern productions.

The original stage was also replaced with a new flat performance stage, while the basement bar was expanded and made more accessible.

A new café was created through a significant extension to the existing building, while the project also supported the installation of a new entrance canopy.

The works required careful consideration of the theatre's historic fabric while introducing modern spaces and facilities for audiences and performers.

The project presented significant engineering challenges due to the theatre's location among surrounding tenement buildings, narrow access lanes and one of Edinburgh's busiest roads.

Close collaboration and detailed planning were required throughout the redevelopment to deliver major structural improvements within the constrained city centre site.

Shirley Evatt, Senior Associate at Will Rudd Edinburgh, said: "Working with historic buildings requires a thoughtful and collaborative approach from the earliest stages of a project. By carefully balancing modern requirements with the needs of an existing structure, these buildings can continue to serve future generations while retaining the qualities that make them so valued.

"Projects like this demonstrate the importance of thoughtful engineering in supporting the refurbishment and continued use of historic buildings while respecting their architectural character and significance. It's fantastic to see the King's Theatre begin its next chapter, and a fitting reward for everyone involved in bringing this remarkable project to life.

"It has been a privilege to work alongside Capital Theatres and the wider project team to help deliver a project that will continue to play such an important role in Edinburgh's cultural landscape for many years to come."
