A new customer services office will open to the public in Musselburgh at 11am on Thursday 27 August, replacing the in-person services previously provided at the Brunton Hall.

The decision to close and mothball the Brunton Hall was taken last year due to the presence of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which is unaffordable to repair.

Customer services and community housing teams will operate from 141 High Street, the former Citizens Advice Bureau. After opening day, hours will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9am–5pm; Wednesday 10am–5pm; and Friday 9am–4pm.

Several teams have already moved into alternative premises. The Brunton Theatre Trust has relocated its main base to the Corn Exchange in Haddington and continues to deliver cultural events in Musselburgh, primarily at Northesk Church and Loretto Theatre.

The council is also exploring options to finance a replacement for the Brunton Hall to provide future arts accommodation in Musselburgh, with an emphasis on an affordable solution that sustains the cultural, economic and social benefits the venue has offered over many years.

East Lothian Council Leader Norman Hampshire said: "The new facility at 141 High Street will provide all of the existing in-person customer services at the Brunton Hall in a convenient town centre location.

"Many people will be very sad to see the Brunton Hall, which has played such a key role at the heart of Musselburgh since 1971, close its doors. It was a decision which was incredibly difficult to take.

"But we remain ambitious for bringing forward a new affordable facility to replace the Brunton Hall that reflects and enhances the building's significant legacy in a space that is fit for the future with community, art, and culture at its heart."

Justice Social Work will move to accommodation within Fisherrow Community Centre on Thursday 20 August.

The Brunton will be closed to the public from 27 August 2026.
