NFRC is urging members to help shape a new Government strategy for built environment professions, as the sector adjusts to the Building Safety Regime and renewed expectations on competence, professionalism and accountability.

NFRC recently took part in a Build UK forum with the Building Professions Team at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to discuss the Government’s call for evidence and how it could inform a long-term strategy for built environment professions, trades and occupations.

The call for evidence acknowledges the industry’s commitment to delivering safe, high-performing and sustainable buildings, while also highlighting persistent concerns over fragmented accountability, uneven standards of professionalism, and gaps in competence and ethical conduct. For roofing, ensuring the right skills, knowledge and experience across the supply chain will be crucial to meeting the higher safety and quality requirements emerging under the evolving regulatory framework.

The forum also considered the latest report from the Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG), which questions the speed of culture change across the sector. NFRC argues that lasting improvement must take account of commercial realities that shape behaviours and decisions, including cashflow pressures, contractual practices, risk allocation and programme pressures.

These factors are particularly acute for specialist contractors, who often deliver critical aspects of building performance yet may have limited influence over decisions made earlier in design and procurement. Any successful strategy should therefore clarify responsibilities and strengthen collaboration throughout the supply chain, while keeping competence requirements proportionate and achievable for businesses of all sizes.

NFRC will continue working with Government and industry stakeholders to ensure the views and practical experience of roofing and cladding contractors are reflected as the strategy develops.
