A new route across part of the former Cockenzie Power Station site is now open to vehicles.
The link connects the Alder Road junction on the B6371 approach to Cockenzie with the B1348 Edinburgh Road. Built by Balfour Beatty for East Lothian Council, it forms part of wider efforts to prepare the industrial land for future redevelopment.
Largely following the line of a former service road to the power station's coal plant, the scheme is intended to ease pressure on local streets ahead of potential commercial and other projects on the former power station and coal store sites.
Work began in September 2024 alongside other redevelopment activity. As well as the main carriageway, the route includes a dedicated lane, set back from the roadway, to encourage safe walking and cycling.
Council Leader Norman Hampshire said: "This will be good news for the local community as it will help direct any construction and future traffic away from Cockenzie itself and other busy road junctions. I'm delighted that this new road is to be known as the Willie Innes Way – and I look forward to meeting members of Willie's family there soon for an official naming ceremony.
"Willie was Leader of East Lothian Council from 2012 until he sadly passed away in October 2021 and it was under his leadership that East Lothian Council purchased this key site for economic and community benefit. It's absolutely fitting that this new road is named after him."
East Lothian Council purchased the former ScottishPower site in 2018 to help drive economic growth and create employment opportunities.
