A major landmark in the redevelopment of George Square will be reached on 26 June as operations to build a striking new carriageway and footway on the north side of the Square come to a finish.
The engineering works involved laying new granite setts across both the pedestrian footway and the vehicle carriageway, with completion scheduled for 5pm on Friday, 26 June.
Following this milestone, vehicular traffic will be permitted to move from West George Street and North Hanover Street onto the freshly laid carriageway towards George Street. Authorised transport, including buses, taxis, and other permitted vehicles, will be allowed to head northbound along North Hanover Street. As per previous arrangements, private motor vehicles can access and utilise the new section of carriageway between the hours of 7pm and 7am. Additionally, vehicular access to the lower section of North Frederick Street is slated to commence in late July, following the conclusion of pending works at the nearby junction.
Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: "The reopening of the road along the north of George Square is another key milestone in the wall to wall transformation of Glasgow's greatest civic space.
"With the high-quality stonework extending across the roads and pavements, everyone is already getting a real sense of how fantastic our new Square is shaping up to be.
"And in recent weeks, we've completed the Cowcaddens Road Avenue - which is already bringing new greenery and a real sense of place to the north side of the city centre. There's has undoubtedly been major roadworks in the city centre in recent months, but we're now beginning to see the transformation we've been working to deliver and which will serve our city well in the decades ahead."
In other areas of the Square, development on the southern carriageway is actively progressing, while construction on the western and eastern footways concluded some time ago. Meanwhile, the next stage of restoring the Sir Walter Scott Monument is underway; the upper section is now finished, and conservation teams have shifted focus to the bottom half.
Broadening out to the wider city centre, the Cowcaddens Road & Dobbie's Loan Avenues Plus scheme drew to a close in May, and the South Portland Street Avenues Plus project is on track to finish next month. Construction on the Argyle Street East Avenue launched earlier this week. Concluding tasks on the largely finished Argyle Street West Avenue will be wrapped up as soon as Scottish Water resolves emergency works at the Hielanman's Umbrella and the block extending westward.
Furthermore, Cathedral Street is scheduled to reopen in the near future following the resolution of Scottish Water emergency works and subsequent resurfacing of the roadway.
The regeneration of George Square is delivered as part of the broader £123 million Avenues programme. This initiative is financed via the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with funding supplied by both the UK and Scottish Governments.
