Network Rail is investing £900,000 to refurbish the railway bridge on Pollokshaws Road, aiming to boost safety and reliability for passengers and road users over the long term.
From 13 July, engineers will carry out repairs and repainting, upgrade drainage and remove overgrown vegetation to extend the structure's life. The programme is scheduled to finish by 19 September 2026.
To deliver the work safely, temporary measures will be in place in August, including two planned railway closures and temporary traffic lights at the Nithsdale Street/Allison Street junction.
Rail services will be affected on the weekends of 8–9 August and 15–17 August, when no trains will run between Glasgow Central and destinations including Cathcart, Maxwell Park, Neilston and Newton via the affected section. Replacement buses will operate, and customers are urged to check before travelling and allow extra time.
The scheme forms part of Network Rail's ongoing programme to maintain and enhance Scotland's rail infrastructure, helping ensure it remains safe, resilient and reliable.
Lesley Percy, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: "This investment will help ensure Pollokshaws Road bridge remains safe and fit for the future, supporting reliable journeys for passengers and road users alike.
"We appreciate that some disruption is unavoidable, and we'd like to thank the community in advance for their patience while we carry out these essential improvements."
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said: "We're encouraging customers travelling between Glasgow Central and Newton or Neilston to plan ahead on the weekends of 8-9 and 22-23 August, when Network Rail carries out this important bridge improvement work.
"Customers should check their journey before travelling and, where possible, use ScotRail services via Barrhead or East Kilbride. Local bus operators also provide alternative travel options.
"We understand these changes may mean some inconvenience for customers, and we thank them for their patience while this essential work is completed."
