Ayrshire's 5G Innovation Region status has accelerated digital connectivity, investment and skills, with the programme's achievements now shaping a wider £14 million digital infrastructure roll-out.
Ayrshire is well placed to sustain long-term digital growth, economic resilience and competitiveness through its participation in the UK Government's 5G Innovation Region (5GIR) programme.
The region received £4.4 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) in 2024, becoming one of ten 5G Innovation Regions across the UK. A commissioned impact report concludes this funding and support have positioned Ayrshire at the forefront of digital technology.
The report says the 5GIR initiative has not only enabled new digital systems across key businesses and sites, but also brought together public, private and academic partners to foster long-term collaboration, innovation and growth.
Project highlights include:
• Roll-out of 25 advanced wireless network solutions
• £1.6 million in additional private sector investment and £360,000 in SME match funding leveraged
• An estimated £7.76 million in gross value added (GVA) generated through productivity gains, infrastructure improvements and innovation activity
• More than 200 people upskilled in advanced digital technologies, helping future‑proof the workforce and ensure businesses can harness new connectivity
Enhanced connectivity at Ayr Low Green, Dean Castle Country Park and Irvine Harbourside has improved visitor experience, public safety and event delivery, demonstrating wider community benefits and boosting tourism.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council and chair of the Ayrshire Economic Joint Committee, said: "Digital innovation is central to Ayrshire's future, and by working closely with our partners, we're positioning the region as a leader in digital connectivity.
"We are delighted with the work that has been carried out. There are really strong foundations in place and we have everything there to deliver long-term, inclusive economic growth
"It's now important that we continue to work with our partners and business community to build on what we've achieved so far in a relatively short period of time. This momentum will now be carried forward through the Ayrshire Digital Economy Ecosystem (ADEE), connecting infrastructure, innovation, skills and inclusion so the region can turn today's progress into long-term economic opportunity."
The report also underscores the role of "industry digital champions" — organisations already showcasing the real-world benefits of advanced connectivity — in building confidence and encouraging wider adoption across the region.
Learning and momentum from the 5GIR work are now directly informing the £14 million Ayrshire Growth Deal Building Digital Capital programme. This next phase will expand advanced digital infrastructure across Ayrshire, supporting the region's journey to become an innovative, digitally advanced and highly attractive location for inward investment.
