SSEN Transmission has successfully completed the delivery of two new electricity transformers to its Lochay substation, achieving a vital milestone in the ongoing modernisation of the regional transmission network.
The heavy transport operations took place through Killin on 12 and 13 May 2026 as part of the Lochay transformer replacement project. The substation itself is situated adjacent to Lochay Power Station. Once fully operational, the upgraded infrastructure will help guarantee a safe and reliable electricity supply while supporting the distribution of renewable energy across Scotland and the wider grid.
Owing to the exceptional weight and size of the transformers, the deliveries required meticulous coordination. The loads were transported through Killin, crossing the Dochart Bridge and travelling along the A827 to reach the site. Specialist haulier JB Rawcliffe managed the movements under a detailed traffic management plan designed to maintain public safety and minimise traffic disruption for road users and the local community.
SSEN Transmission collaborated closely with regional partners to structure and execute the logistics, implementing temporary traffic controls where necessary to ensure safe passage.
Louise Anderson, Lead Community Liaison Manager at SSEN Transmission, said: "We'd like to thank residents and businesses in Killin for their patience and support during the delivery of these transformers. We recognise the disruption this type of activity can cause, and we're delighted to have been able to deliver the infrastructure to site safely.
"Thanks also to Police Scotland and Transport Scotland for their support in making a safe delivery to site possible.
"The delivery marks a significant milestone for the Lochay substation upgrade, and we're grateful to the community for helping us reach this stage."
Construction work on the Lochay Transformer Replacement Project originally commenced in 2023 and continues to progress on schedule. The arrival of these transformers represents a major step forward in the ongoing efforts to modernise the substation and reinforce the local electricity transmission network.
