The internal refurbishment of the Citadel Leisure Centre is moving into its next phase, with major improvement works on the wet changing facilities scheduled to begin shortly.
To allow these essential upgrades to take place, the wet changing area will close for seven months starting on Monday 15 June. Throughout this period, the centre's existing dry changing rooms will serve both wet and dry users. Additionally, extra poolside changing cubicles are being installed to boost overall capacity. Although management aims to limit disruption, swimmers are asked to arrive 'swim ready' when possible, while fitness class and gym attendees are encouraged to arrive already dressed for their workouts.
To manage the transition, a temporary timetable will be published online on Monday 7 June, with the revised fitness class programme coming into effect on Monday 15 June. Visitors are advised to allocate extra time for changing due to heightened demand during peak hours. Members can also utilise alternative facilities at Prestwick and Maybole Leisure Clubs while the work is carried out. This project is part of South Ayrshire Council's broader investment strategy for its Sport and Leisure portfolio, following the recent reopening of Prestwick Leisure Club and the active expansion and upgrade works at Troon Leisure Club.
Councillor Chris Cullen, South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services, said: "It's really encouraging to see the next stage of improvements at the Citadel getting underway. These are significant works that will help us modernise the facilities and continue improving the experience for everyone who uses the centre.
"At the same time, we fully recognise how important these services are to people's daily routines, health and wellbeing. A vast amount of work has gone into making sure we can keep the centre operating as effectively as possible throughout the refurbishment, while keeping disruption to an absolute minimum.
"I want to thank customers for their patience and understanding during the works, and also acknowledge the efforts of staff who are working incredibly hard behind the scenes to keep services running and support users throughout the project."
