Sanctuary Scotland Begins Construction At Edmonstone Estate

Sanctuary Scotland has officially broken ground on a new 55-home affordable housing development situated within the Edmonstone Estate masterplan in south-east Edinburgh. Located at the junction of Old Dalkeith Road and The Wisp, the project is a significant component of a major residential expansion that will eventually see over 850 new homes built on the historic estate.

The development is designed to address local housing requirements through a diverse mix of properties, including 30 two-bedroom flats, 14 two-bedroom houses, and 11 three-bedroom houses. Every home has been planned with future adaptation in mind, featuring provisions for wheelchair access and the potential installation of wet rooms to ensure long-term accessibility.

Sustainability is a core feature of the project, with the new properties being connected to a district heating network. This energy-efficient system aligns with the environmental goals of the broader masterplan and aims to provide residents with high-quality, sustainable living spaces.

The project is being delivered as part of a Section 75 agreement with Avant Homes and sits within the developer's larger site masterplan. The initiative aims to foster a balanced community in the area surrounding the site of the former Edmonstone House.

Gillian Lavety, Sanctuary's Development Director for Scotland, said: "We are delighted that work has now started on our 55 new affordable homes at Edmonstone, marking an important milestone within this significant masterplan for south-east Edinburgh. These homes will help create a vibrant and sustainable new community, providing high-quality, energy-efficient housing for local people. Delivering more affordable homes in areas of high demand remains a key priority for Sanctuary, and we are proud to be playing our part in the wider transformation of the Edmonstone Estate."

Construction is now underway on-site, with the project currently scheduled for completion in late 2027.
