A draft Masterplan has been produced to guide the regeneration of North Laurieston, a distinctive area close to the River Clyde and the city centre that is noted for its historic character.
Prepared by Elder & Cannon Architects for Glasgow City Council and New Gorbals Housing Association, the draft North Laurieston Masterplan will be opened to public feedback over six weeks in May and June.
Rooted in existing development frameworks for the city centre and the south of the Clyde, the plan aims to repair and re‑densify the district into a liveable area that respects cultural and historic assets while reconnecting it to a reinvigorated waterfront. It proposes advancing development on vacant land and in empty buildings.
The vision addresses short-, medium- and long-term community needs and recognises North Laurieston's strategic role, linking it with nearby neighbourhoods that have already seen successful regeneration. It seeks to reconnect the district with the city centre, Tradeston, New Gorbals and the wider Laurieston area; reinstate urban form by tackling gap sites, the civic waterfront and key connections; revitalise heritage assets, streets and public spaces; and re-establish a vibrant neighbourhood on the South Bank.
Priority proposals include bringing vacant buildings — notably many of the listed properties on Carlton Place — back into productive use; upgrading the quality and appeal of local streets and spaces to counter pervasive environmental decline; and redeveloping empty plots.
As some interventions will be long-term, the initial focus will be an infrastructure‑first approach, with improvements to the public realm intended to build confidence and attract investor and developer interest.
The council will work with property owners to manage and enhance heritage buildings and, where necessary, use statutory powers to address deterioration and return assets to use.
George Gillespie, Executive Director for Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability at Glasgow City Council, said: "The North Laurieston Masterplan aims to both exploit the tremendous potential and tackle the challenges in the area to transform it into a thriving 'south bank' destination on the banks of the Clyde. The Plan will drive the redevelopment of vacant land and buildings to bring real benefit to the local community. The regeneration of the North Laurieston District will be the 'last piece in the jigsaw' that connects to and complements the successful transformation of neighbouring areas."
