Demolition work is progressing at Allershaw Tower in Wishaw as the large-scale transformation of the Gowkthrapple area continues. The landmark tower, which formerly housed 70 homes primarily for residents over the age of 60, is being dismantled as part of a district-wide programme to replace all 48 high-rise blocks with modern, sustainable residential units.
Specialist contractor Dem-Master Demolition Limited has been on-site since October 2025. The project is being managed through controlled demolition methods, with strict protocols in place to mitigate the impact of noise and dust on the surrounding neighbourhood while ensuring the highest safety standards.
Once the tower is completely removed, the site will be cleared and prepared for the next stage of the council's housing investment plan. The overarching goal is to reshape the area's skyline and provide homes that are fit for the future.
Cameron Barr, Housing Investment Manager, said: "Gowkthrapple has already seen significant investment deliver new homes that are reshaping the area into a more modern, welcoming place to live.
"This is about far more than demolition. We're building safe, energy efficient homes that genuinely meet the needs of our residents, and the progress speaks for itself. New homes are already making a real difference to the community, improving lives, strengthening neighbourhoods and making sure our housing is fit for the future."
He added: "The changing skyline in Wishaw tells its own story. It's a sign of our long-term commitment to creating better homes and stronger communities for years to come."
The council has maintained regular communication with local residents throughout the process to ensure the community remains informed as the landmark site transitions toward its future redevelopment.
