Work to install new and replacement cycle and bus shelters across Orkney is due to be completed this week, after external funding earlier this year provided for nine bus shelters and five cycle shelters.
The fully funded scheme also includes upgrades to bus timetable displays across the county and to real-time information points at Kirkwall Travel Centre.
Following a competitive tender, Trueform was appointed to supply the shelters and displays, with Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd undertaking the installation. A thank-you was extended to the contractor for meeting the tight deadline within this financial year and for delivering a high-quality finish.
There has already been recognition of the benefits from Community Councils such as Birsay.
Laura Cromarty, Service Manager (Transportation), said: "As bus passenger figures continue to grow year on year, delivering new shelters and upgrading displays is an important step in improving how people move around Orkney.
"The shelters and infrastructure improvements help to make public transport more reliable, more comfortable, and more appealing for everyday journeys, and will encourage active travel across Orkney."
The new bus shelters are at Stenness Village; Harray Road End; Kirkwall Airport; Rendall Community Centre; Carness, Kirkwall; Lighthouse Corner, Deerness; Birsay Palace; French Road Hoy; and Stromness Travel Centre.
Cycle shelters have been installed at Sanday Airfield; Lyness Pier; Rousay Pier; Rapness Pier, Westray; and Loth Pier, Sanday.
