Orkney Islands Council Adds 14 Homes As Housing Drive Gathers Pace

Fourteen newly built homes are set to join Orkney Islands Council's housing stock, as the authority advances a wide-ranging programme to meet demand for homes across the islands.

Six properties at Walliwall in Kirkwall and eight on Cairston Road in Stromness are being acquired 'off the shelf' from private developers and will be allocated to applicants on the Council’s housing waiting list.

The additions comprise four four-bedroom and two two-bedroom homes at Walliwall, alongside four three-bedroom and four two-bedroom homes in Stromness.

Under the Council's 2024 Local Housing Strategy, Orkney is targeting 1,030 new homes over the next decade, with a 60/40 split between affordable and private housing. Delivery is expected through a blend of Council projects, Orkney Housing Association Limited (OHAL), Places for People Scotland, Development Trusts and private developers, backed by innovation, partnership working and financing.

In December, the Council agreed a landmark partnership with Places for People (PfP) Scotland to deliver up to 500 homes over ten years, marking the first time a national housing association will build in the islands.

Earlier this month, a scheme at Copland's Road in Stromness was added to the Council's Capital Programme, providing 25 general needs social rented homes in a mix of one and two-bedroom properties.

Further capacity for students is also being created. A funding package confirmed in November will increase student accommodation by purchasing and refurbishing existing properties to offer four additional bed spaces for those attending UHI Orkney.

The Council is progressing plans to demolish the former Papdale Halls of Residence in Kirkwall, a move that could unlock the site for future affordable housing.

Separately, OHAL has announced a 41-home development at Walliwall in Kirkwall, with construction to be undertaken by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd.

Additional announcements are expected in due course, including potential small-scale developments in rural communities.
