Network Rail Completes Major Maintenance Works During Glasgow Central Closure

Network Rail teams have completed a vast programme of maintenance and renewal works at Glasgow Central, executing tasks in just ten days that would typically require ten months of planning and nightshifts.

The opportunity arose following the closure of Scotland's busiest station on 8 March due to the Union Street fire. With the station inaccessible to the 1,200 trains that usually pass through daily, engineers mobilised rapidly to carry out essential upgrades before the partial reopening on 18 March.

The scale of the trackside operation included the removal of more than 108 tonnes of redundant rail from the station approaches and the replacement of 73 timber sleepers. Additionally, teams cleared over 6,200 sqm of vegetation from the line side.

Technical improvements were also made to the station's complex power and signalling systems. Engineers inspected 299 sections of Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), performing essential repairs to wires and insulators. Further work was conducted on switches and crossings—the components allowing trains to move between tracks—while 439 insulated block joints, which are critical to the signalling system's ability to track train locations, were also inspected.

Keiren Sharkey, infrastructure maintenance delivery manager at Network Rail, said: "It was a situation none of us expected, but our teams reacted immediately and were determined to make the most of this rare opportunity.

"It allowed teams based in Motherwell and Glasgow to complete an enormous amount of work that would have required a much longer period of time to complete under normal conditions."
