Glasgow City Council has awarded the contract for the Argyle Street East Avenue project to Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd. The decision, made by a council committee on 19 March, paves the way for construction to commence in late May on a development valued at £12.19 million.
The project focuses on a vital stretch of the city centre between Glasgow Cross and the Union Street/Jamaica Street junction. Over a 36-month delivery period, the initiative will introduce new road surfaces, upgraded footways, and dedicated cycleways. The plans also include the creation of new public and green spaces to enhance the local environment.
A significant feature of the development is the improvement of public transport links. A new bus route will be established running west to east through the city centre—utilising the current pedestrian precinct—to help reduce overall journey times.
Work will be executed in four distinct phases:
• Phase One: From the Queen Street junction to the Stockwell Street junction.
• Phase Two: Between the 'Four Corners' and Queen Street.
• Phases Three and Four: Stretching between Stockwell Street, Glasgow Cross, and Moir Street.
Wills Bros secured the contract following an open tender process that saw interest from 23 contractors and four final bids. Applications were evaluated based on price and quality, with specific scoring for traffic management, stakeholder engagement, and experience in similar urban programmes.
This development is the latest instalment of the Glasgow City Region City Deal-funded Avenues programme, which represents the most significant transformation of the city centre since the 1970s. The work on Argyle Street is intended to complement ongoing investments in the surrounding Trongate area.
George Gillespie, Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability at Glasgow City Council, commented: "The Argyle Street East Avenue will continue the regeneration of Glasgow city centre through major improvements on one of Glasgow's most important streets. When complete, the work here will make Argyle Street more attractive to everyone who lives, works, shops, visits, eats, drinks and invests in it."
The council has committed to keeping local residents and businesses informed of any significant disruptions throughout the construction process.
