SSEN Transmission has marked a key milestone on its Creag Dhubh–Inveraray 275kV overhead line, confirming the first tower on the route is now fully assembled. The structure stands just south of Creag Dhubh substation at Taynafead near Cladich.

The project involves building a new overhead line between Creag Dhubh substation and Inveraray. Once the new line is commissioned, the existing 132kV line between Inveraray and Creag Dhubh substation, dating back to the 1960s, will be removed.

This scheme forms part of the Argyll and Kintyre 275kV Reinforcement Project, designed to strengthen the transmission network across the region and enable future renewable connections, supporting Scotland and the UK's clean energy and energy security goals.

To support delivery across challenging terrain, more than 4km of access tracks have been installed. Tower assembly is progressing along the remainder of the route, with foundations for the remaining structures advancing well.

Despite periods of difficult weather, the programme remains on schedule thanks to the efforts of the project team and close collaboration with local businesses. Clachan‑based A&L McCrae, working on behalf of United Infrastructure Ltd, has been a key contributor—supplying concrete for both the overhead line and the substation, providing stone, and constructing access tracks—demonstrating the value of local supply chain partnerships.

The new overhead line will connect into a 275kV substation at Creag Dhubh near Cladich, where construction has moved firmly past the midway point since works began in summer 2024. BAM Nuttall has completed extensive earthworks and Oban‑based TSL Contractors has delivered the two main substation buildings. With the major civil phase finished, the site has been handed over to Siemens Energy to lead the next stage of electrical installation—evidence of strong momentum across the programme.
