Infrastructure Works Begin at Glasgow's Yorkhill Quay

Peel Waters has officially commenced infrastructure works at Yorkhill Quay, marking a major milestone in the delivery of the Glasgow Waters regeneration project.

A start-on-site event, attended by leaders from the city's political, property, and leisure sectors, was held to celebrate the beginning of the works that will unlock a new waterfront neighbourhood.

Master planned by waterside regeneration specialists Peel Waters, Glasgow Waters is a mixed-use district designed to transform 13 acres of long-vacant brownfield land along the River Clyde into a connected community. Yorkhill Quay is one of four distinct neighbourhoods within the master plan. Once these enabling works are finished, the site will have the necessary infrastructure to support more than 1,100 new homes, as well as leisure and commercial developments.

The project includes the creation of a 400m waterfront promenade for walking and cycling. This new active travel route will link two of the city's major attractions, The Clydeside Distillery and The Riverside Museum, opening the site to the public for the first time in several decades. Environmental enhancements form a key part of the plan, with the installation of four bird boxes, two insect hotels, and the planting of 76 semi-mature trees alongside wildflower meadows designed to support urban pollinators.

The £3.75 million infrastructure investment by Peel Waters will deliver several essential enabling works, including:

• A new 3-4m wide riverside walkway along Yorkhill Quay, which is intended to be widened into a boulevard during later phases.

• The installation of fresh-water supplies and new foul and surface water systems.

• The relocation of the Riverside Museum roundabout and the construction of a new access point into the museum car park.

• Improved connectivity between Partick, Finnieston, the SEC, and existing riverfront landmarks.

Advance Construction Scotland Ltd has been appointed to carry out the works, which are scheduled for completion in December 2026. As part of their contract, the Scottish-based firm has committed to four apprenticeships: two through the Glasgow Tigers Programme and two via Action For Children's Kickstart scheme.

Brian Lavalette, Property Director for Scotland at Peel Waters, said: "Starting work on site at Yorkhill Quay marks a hugely exciting moment for Glasgow Waters. These infrastructure works are essential to unlocking the future development of a landmark waterside neighbourhood that will bring new homes, improved connectivity and high-quality public realm to this iconic stretch of the River Clyde.

"Yorkhill Quay is a pivotal part of our long-term vision for Glasgow Waters, which will be a high quality, community-focused waterside district that generates new jobs, investment and opportunities for the city. This milestone puts us firmly on the path to delivering that ambition."

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development and Land Use at Glasgow City Council, said: "It's great to see the start of these important infrastructure works at Yorkhill Quay and the significant investment being made into the regeneration of this part of the city's waterfront. This project forms a key part of the ongoing transformation of the Clydeside in Glasgow, improving access, strengthening connections between key destinations such as the Riverside Museum and the SEC, and supporting future development that will bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to local communities and the wider city."

Andrew Paterson, Contract Manager at Advance Construction (Scotland) Ltd, added: "We are proud to be delivering this major programme of works on behalf of Peel Waters. Our teams will be carrying out the project with a clear focus on safety, environmental responsibility and minimising disruption for neighbours, while ensuring high-quality infrastructure is in place to support the long-term transformation of Yorkhill Quay."

The infrastructure phase of the Yorkhill Quay development is expected to be finished by December 2026.
