SSEN Transmission has announced an upcoming public information session in Stornoway to present detailed proposals for the redevelopment of the Stornoway Grid Supply Point (GSP).
The event is scheduled to take place at the Cabarfeidh Hotel on Thursday, 26 February 2026, from 3pm to 7pm.
The proposed upgrades are a critical component of the Western Isles' energy strategy, designed to accommodate the rapid expansion of renewable power generation across the islands. By modernising the GSP, SSEN Transmission aims to significantly enhance the security of the local electricity supply while ensuring the distribution network remains resilient for the future.
The redevelopment plan involves the construction of a new GSP on a site adjacent to the existing facility, located off the A859 south of Marybank. Key features of the project include:
• New Infrastructure: The installation of two new grid transformers and associated equipment.
• Strategic Connectivity: Direct links to the Lewis Hub and the wider local distribution network to manage energy flow efficiently.
• Modern Facilities: Construction of new building infrastructure to house the upgraded equipment.
• Decommissioning: Once the new system is operational, the transformers at the current GSP site will be safely decommissioned.
This session serves as a precursor to the formal pre-application process, allowing the local community and stakeholders to review the project scope and site selection before a full planning application is submitted.
