Construction gets under way this week on a £440,000 scheme to improve access at Dunkeld & Birnam station and strengthen links to popular local walking routes.
Between 4 February and 3 April, Network Rail will deliver a new step‑free connection between the station and Birnam Glen alongside upgrades to nearby footpaths and lighting.
Funded by Transport Scotland, the project forms part of a wider programme to enhance accessibility across Scotland's Railway.
The works include a new ramped footpath from the rear of Platform 2, tying into the existing route towards Birnam Glen Road.
Network Rail will also upgrade the path beneath the railway overbridge and install new lighting columns along Birnam Glen to improve visibility and safety.
On Wednesday 4 February, a site compound will be established in the sidings to support construction activity.
From Monday 9 February to Friday 27 February, teams will build the ramped footpath to provide step‑free access from Platform 2 to the existing path linking to Birnam Glen Road.
Between Monday 2 March and Friday 13 March, the footpath beneath the railway overbridge will be upgraded, connecting the new ramp to Platform 1.
From Monday 2 March to Friday 3 April, Birnam Glen Road will be closed to vehicles on weekdays from 9am to 3pm between the turning area and the junction with Perth Road. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout.
From Monday 16 March to Friday 3 April, new lighting columns will be installed along Birnam Glen and the roadway resurfaced.
Once complete, the scheme will create a smoother, safer and more reliable route for all station users.
The work follows the successful first phase completed in 2025, which raised both platforms to improve safety and accessibility for passengers.
John Collins, senior sponsor of strategy and investment at Network Rail, said: "These improvements will make a real difference for everyone using the station.
"This work aims to create a safer and more accessible environment that supports the community's needs now and in the future.
"Our teams are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum, and we're grateful to local residents for their patience as we complete these essential upgrades."
