SP Energy Networks has announced the commencement of enabling works ahead of the construction of a new high-voltage Branxton substation in East Lothian.
The project is part of a wider investment programme to future-proof the transmission network, which is expected to see electricity demand double by 2050.
The new substation is vital for creating much-needed capacity on the network and improving the resilience of the local electricity supply.
The enabling phase involves several key infrastructure construction elements, including:
• The creation of a slip road off the northbound A1.
• Duct installation necessary for traffic light power.
• Installing barrier protection for the railway bridge.
• Resurfacing the Bilsdean/Dunglass A1 junction, which connects Dunglass Road and Birnieknowes Road.
Additionally, a new 2-metre wide shared-use path will be installed south of the road sections, accommodating cyclists, pedestrians, and horse riders. No road closures are anticipated, and access will be maintained throughout the works.
An area designated for materials storage will eventually be converted into a welfare compound and will serve as the starting point for the haul road leading to the main substation site.
SP Energy Networks is working with East Lothian Council to confirm specific start dates for the work. Residents are encouraged to attend a drop-in event to view project maps, ask questions, and share concerns ahead of work beginning.
The event will be held from 3pm-7pm on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, at the Innerwick Outdoor Centre / Old School House, Innerwick EH42 1SE.
