Network Rail is set to close the Stevenston level crossing for one full weekend in November to carry out an essential upgrade of the road barriers. The maintenance work, which will help ensure the crossing remains safe and reliable for the 2,000 people who use it every day, is scheduled to take place between Saturday, 8 November 2025 and Monday, 10 November 2025.

The closure will commence in the early hours of Saturday and remain in place until Monday morning. During this time, vehicle traffic will be diverted via Caledonian Road, Dubbs Road, and the B780.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, stated: "We know how important the level crossing is to the Stevenston community, and we're committed to keeping it safe and reliable for everyone who uses it. This upgrade will help ensure the barrier system continues to operate smoothly and safely for years to come."

The work at Stevenston is part of a wider programme of improvements being carried out along the Largs line while it is closed. Other teams will be undertaking drainage repairs at Largs station, clearing vegetation, inspecting track and signalling equipment, and maintaining overhead lines.

For pedestrians, a temporary footbridge will be available at Stevenston station, though there will be short periods when it cannot be used to allow engineering trains to pass. Pedestrians are asked to use the same vehicle diversion route during these times:

• Saturday: between 2am and 6am

• Sunday: between 4.30pm and 10.30pm

• Monday: between 1.30am and 5.20am

As a result of the line closure, ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Largs will only run as far as Kilwinning. Buses will replace trains between Kilwinning and Largs, calling at Stevenston, Saltcoats, Ardrossan South Beach, West Kilbride, and Fairlie. Direct buses will also run between Glasgow Central and Ardrossan Harbour to ensure connections with ferry sailings.
