SSEN Transmission is hosting consultation events to provide local residents with an overview of the proposed Balallan 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Switching Station and its connection to the Muaitheabhal (Uisenis) Wind Farm.
These projects aim to strengthen the Western Isles' electricity network and support the delivery of renewable energy.
The Balallan Switching Station, located off the A859 near Loch Stranndabhat, will connect the wind farm via a combination of underground cable and a new single circuit 132kV steel trident pole overhead line. It will also link to the existing Harris–Stornoway 132kV overhead line, which connects to the proposed Lewis Hub 132kV substation, enhancing both local and wider grid supply.
Project Manager Lyle Cairns explained that the switching station is essential for managing power flows and enabling the safe and efficient transmission of renewable energy to the GB grid, while also supporting the local distribution network. He added that feedback from initial engagement events in August has helped shape the final design plans, and the team looks forward to discussing the proposals at the upcoming events.
The consultation events will take place on Wednesday, 22 October, from 3–7pm at the Kinloch Historical Society Community Hub, Balallan (HS2 9PN), and on Thursday, 23 October, from 3–7pm at The Resource Centre, Kershader (HS2 9QA). Members of the public are encouraged to attend to speak directly with the project team and share their feedback.
